Yellow fever is a viral infection from mosquitoes. It came to Louisiana in 1817 and lasted until 1905. In this time period, more than 41000 people died. The death rate, at one point, got up to 60 percent. The lowest years for death rates from yellow fever were 1865, 1883, and 1889. The highest death rate in America was in 1853 when 7,849 died.
Yellow fever originated in Africa. It got to America from ships bringing slaves to New York. When the slaves got off of the ships, the disease spread from them. After that, it spread from people who got infected.
Some of the symptoms for yellow fever are coma, heart dysfunction, headache, fever, vomiting, red eyes, face, or tongue, jaundice, and a few others. At this point, there is no specific known treatment, but they have one for the symptoms.
Anyone, at any age can get yellow fever. Scientists have found out that elderly people have a higher risk of getting an infection. The disease usually kicks in about 3-6 days after getting bit.
When people died, they were put into caskets, and buried in grave yards. __found a child’s casket and donated it to the Cabildo. At some point of time, a child, who died from yellow fever, was placed into this casket after their death.
